When Even Fish Go Sentimental: a loose evening of poetry, film and music
23 June 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
(Finix cafe, Hasselt, Belgium)
The year 2018 started for cineaste Marina Kazakova with a book about a prominent British painter “Gluck: Her Biography” by Diana Souhami. Inspired by the biography, Marina jumped into a journey to experience the artist’s works face-to-face. She travelled to Hampstead (London), Brighton and Steyning (West Sussex) where Gluck spent important periods of her life. Later the film-essay got made under the name “Gluck: At First Glance”, with Martin Pel (a co-curator of the exhibition ‘Gluck: Art and Identity’) sharing curious details about Gluck’s art works.
The evening will kick off with a brief poetry reading by Marina Kazakova. Then the film-essay (27 min) will be screened. After that, a Paris-based band ‘Opium Dream Estate’ will perform their beautiful music: a combination of various music genres such as gothic folk, indie rock, ambient, blues.
About the Artists
Marina Kazakova is a Belgian-based poet, cineaste, and journalist. She is currently at work on her art-based PHD research on “lyric film-poem’ at LUCA School of Art (KU Leuven), and has recently produced a film-essay “Gluck: At First Glance” about a prominent modern British painter Gluck (1895 – 1978) who was a truly unique artist, one that never belonged to any movement or school of painting but has largely escaped the attention of art scholars and the general public.
Opium Dream Estate is a Paris-based band that combines various music genres such as gothic folk, indie rock, ambient, blues, psychedelic… delivering a sensorial experience.
