The poem “The Zephyr Blows Through Porta Nigra”, accompanied by Sara Maino’s painting “Studio Plutoniano” (olive tree charcoal, fat pastel on A3 recycled paper, 30x42cm), is published in MAINTENANT 18: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art.

This edition, edited by Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges and published by Three Rooms Press, explores the theme “It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism.” The journal emphasizes that creativity is limitless and calls for separating commerce from governance to envision strategies for socio-political and economic equality, exposing the links between warfare and capitalism.

The poem was inspired by a transit trip in 2023 through Trier, Karl Marx’s hometown. Standing under the ancient Porta Nigra, between the vine-covered Riesling hills and France, I listened to the whispers of Karl Marx:

“The less you think, the less you love,
The less you theorise,
the less you sing,
the less you paint,
the less you fence, the more you save –
The greater becomes your treasure,
Which neither moths nor dust will devour…
The less you are, the more you have.”

The MAINTENANT series, established in 2008, is an annual anthology showcasing the work of renowned and emerging contemporary Dada artists and writers from around the world. It is archived in prestigious international institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and the BelVUE Museum in Brussels.
