There was no trace of humans
Over the snowed-up beach,
I thought of you, as I do often,
And followed you inside this chiaroscuro noon.
I screwed one eye to see the white:
The snow, the waves, the sky,
It is this pale light that gives
A feeling of a new world.
A heart that favours calm
Couldn’t be more pleased –
Seeing the stove lit, the floor swept,
Even the white sang!
There is something unexplored in everything!
Qu’est-ce que j’ai découvert!
It was impossible to say no
to this snowed-up silence,
Before my eyes
the ocean whispered something
Of the coming summer –
I smelled the dancers of Matisse.
